It’s Important To File Your Tax Return Every Year

The CRA uses information from your personal tax return to calculate how much your Canada Child Benefit payments will be. To get the Child benefit, you have to file your tax return every year, even if you did not have income in that said year. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, they also have to file a return every year for you to qualify for the child benefit. This is a tax free monthly payment that is administered by the CRA.

How Often Is The Benefit Payment Adjusted?

The Canada Child Benefit is paid over a  period of 12-months. Starting each calendar year in July of one year to June of the next. Your benefit payments will be recalculated every July based on information from your income tax and benefit return from the previous year.  This is why it is so important to be tax return compliant a nd file every year.

What is The CRA Eligibility?

According to the CRA, to be eligible for the benefit, you have to meet the following conditions.  You must live with your child.  The child must be younger than 18 years old. You must be the primary caregiver of your child.  Your spouse or common-law partner must be a Canadian citizen. Your partner must be a permanent resident. He or she must also be a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months, and who has a valid permit in the 19th month.
