New Labor Laws

As an Alberta business owner you need to be informed of new labor laws.  Employees can take job-protected leaves for personal life events. This new legislation is effective in Alberta January 1, 2018.

Long Term Illness and Injury

Firstly, there is a long-term illness and injury program. This insurance provides the employee with up to 16 weeks away from work. This helps the employee recover from personal sickness or injury.

New Canadian Citizen

Secondly, another leave is the citizenship ceremony leave.  As a new Canadian and attending an official ceremony you are entitled to a half-day.

Coverage For Critical Illness

Thirdly, if there has been a death in your immediate family, there is up to three days from work. If your child is critically sick, you are entitled to 36 weeks at home to care for your child.  There is insurance which provides up to five days for personal sickness or short-term care. This is available to you if you are caring for an immediate family member.  Finally, Critical illness of an adult family member covers up to 16 weeks for employees who take time away from work to care for an ill or injured adult in your family.

Death or Disappearance Of a Child

Fourthly, this insurance is provided to eligible Alberta employees with up to 52 weeks away from work who had a child disappear as a result of a crime.  There is further assistance of 104 weeks if a child died as a result of a crime.

Domestic Violence

Finally, It is sad that there is even a need for this coverage.  This insurance allows for up to 10 days from work for your employees experiencing domestic violence issues.

In conclusion, it is important as an Alberta business owner,  to keep up to date on Alberta labor laws. If you have questions, contact Alberta Employment Standards.
